A second-story master suite addition to a narrow 21-foot wide, single-story Craftsman home in Berkeley.
Design Challenge: Reconciling divergent client aesthetics (Mid-Century Modern vs. Classical) within a constrained footprint, while integrating a new vertical circulation and respecting the original architecture.
Scope: Design Development of a new side entry foyer and porch, an interior stairway, and a second-story master bedroom, bathroom, and private deck oriented for western views.
Outcome: The design successfully created a modern, practical addition that maximized space and views, achieving a sophisticated balance between the clients’ preferences and the project budget. The project was developed through the Design Development phase before being canceled due to unforeseen client circumstances.
